Grand Canyon Trickle

seconds ticking into silence
the void expanding
expected drought forecasted
dry season of us

sunshowers so random
a poisoned rain cuts
the concave of dust
covering the cacti
pebbles & stranded seashells
of a vast itchy saltine desert

still day after day
after week after year after decades
seconds trickle into silence

dry little stream gouged
surprised by a
sunshower that cuts canyon
deeper
deeper
deeper

you wait to explore
until donkeys are needed
and a guide
and a tour group
just to get to the other side

except you waited too long
a trickle too late
to see on your summer vacation
a natural wonder of the world

our history
just petroglyphs
artifacts so precious
easily faded
in the hot heat of sun
purified unpreserved
destroyed by day hikers
just another piece of history lost
